The 74 TR6 was fitted with the J-type but the A-type sill fit just fine with 
the adapter used on the early TR6's.  One can tell easily with just a test 
drive.  The A-type has an accumulator and will shift into O/D instantly and 
sometimes with a jolt.  The J-type does not have an hydraulic accumulator and 
will 
shift into O/D at a rate determined by the pump capacity and piston volume.  
Mine will take about a second at 30 MPH oand half a second at 60.

Visually the easiest thing to expalin is the orientation of the solenoid.  
The A-type has a vertically mounted solenoid whereas the J-type's solenoid is 
horizontal.  There are many other external differences but that is the easiest 
one to explain.
