Mix small amounts and work fast.  It is not recommended to alter  the 
chemistry to make it cure slower as that effects the hardness of the end  
product.  
Although I have not had direct experience with this, I understand  that it is 
something you may regret down the road. . .after it is painted.
I hear you with the clean up, etc.  It is summer here in FL and I am  facing 
the same thing.
