Chad,

Yes, I have seen the plastic clips attaching the side brightwork. May =
have been when the top was re-painted, from previous work.=20

=20

I had two Stags built within a few months of each other, I pulled the =
trims off the hard top for repainting, one had plastic and one had =
metal. =20

=20

I think the plastic clips do a better job of not piercing the paint =
where pop-rivets pierce the paint and allow corrosion to set in. But the =
metal clips do a better job holding the trims.

=20

BTW, did you get another Stag to replace your Mimosa one you sold?

My trims under the window (813775/6) had plastic clips. I am trying to =
source replacements as I will have drill holes to pop-rivet the little =
metal clips in place and I don't want to put more holes in the metal.

=20

John,

Do you mean StagByTriumph Garage operated by Glenn Merrell, aka =
StagByTriumph?

Maybe.

Here is the scoop:

First there are several types of clips and fittings. Some suppliers get =
it wrong with their =E2=80=9Ckits=E2=80=9D, combining the wrong parts or =
not asking the customer the correct questions first.

Another factor is of course the Dreaded Previous Mechanic, Dreaded =
Previous Owner, Dreaded Previous Dealer who may have changed or applied =
the incorrect parts in a repair.

=20

The hardtop upper brightwork trim812219 original plastic clips 625953 =
are a two part system. Some hardtops have had these replaced with metal =
clips and pop rivets. Going to metal created problems as it deformed =
the trim and nicked the paintwork metal and allowed corrosion and rust =
to quickly set in.

http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.php?c=3Dviewproduct =
<http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.php?c=3Dviewproduct&pid=3D239&cat=3D53=

8408436403

1. There is a plastic plug with a hole in the center that gets =
pushed into the drilled hole in the metal.

2. The second part is the tabbed plastic with a plastic round =
post to match with the hole plug

The tabbed portion is twisted into the metal trim piece. These allow =
the tabbed piece to be slid to position with the plug. =20

=20

The other trim pieces 813775/6 at the windows are metal clips 630881 for =
the sides; There are two different size holes for these clips. It is =
not like BL produced a hundred thousand Hard Tops for Stags, but they =
did build many other models and marques using the same trims and clips.

http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.php?c=3Dviewproduct =
<http://www.ldpart.co.uk/shop/shop.php?c=3Dviewproduct&pid=3D586&cat=3D53=

&pid=3D586&cat=3D53&maincat=3D9&start=3D0&sid=3Dsid25d6421f0fba01e2271bf4=
8408436403

Note there should also be a plastic gasket 622663 & 623720 under the =
edge of the hardtop metal edge that was once held in place by the trim =
clips holding the brightwork below the hard top side and rear windows. =
This plastic =E2=80=9CJ=E2=80=9D shaped strip trapped water and caused =
the hardtop edge under the rear windows to rot =E2=80=93 there was a =
rolled seam there.

=20

I will guess that supplier of the clips for that kit did not ask which =
size holes =E2=80=93 typically 7/64=E2=80=9D for the side brightwork, or =
the picker grabbed the wrong pop rivets.

=20

This is why I recommend LDPart.co.uk for things like this on Stags. =
Peter Howells knows the subtle differences and pays careful attention to =
these details.

=20

In North America, if you have a good parts counter person at a good =
parts supplier such as NAPA, they will grab the clips catalogue and a =
caliper if they cannot locate it in their extensive database online and =
find the exact clip you need. The various coachwork companies used =
standard brightwork trim and clips across many auto manufacturers, =
certainly since GM and Ford both owned manufacturing and assembly plants =
in the UK producing vehicles like Vauxhall, Reliant, Cortina, Capri, JLR =
etc using the same dimension trims and clips from those eras.

=20

For any clip for any LBC, Check the UK company Bresco, =
http://www.bresco.com/ =E2=80=93 chances are they got clips to fit any =
trim on any of your LBC=E2=80=99s, just be exact on your measurements =
because clips can look the same but be different in a dimension by a =
fraction of an inch or mm. They have the plastic two piece hardtop =
system as used on Jaguars / BL / Rover Triumph, and the metal clip =
pieces for the other areas on the vehicle for the attaching the =
brightwork. Pop rivets, buy those at your local hardware store.

=20

Cheers!

was there a difference in clips that held the lower rear trim in place=20
between a Mk1 and 2?

I bought the clip kit, and it uses 1/8 rivots, but the holes in the=20
top are twice as large.
