And, to belabor the point to a fare thee well, I have roll-started old, =
generator equipped trucks that had either completely dead or even no =
batteries. The residual magnetism in the fields of an old generator can =
produce sufficient charging voltage to provide ignition current. Not so =
with alternators!

But it is true that =E2=80=9Cdead=E2=80=9D batteries can recover =
sufficiently to feed the coil. And thinking of driving techniques, =
parking a vehicle anticipating how it should be positioned for easy =
starting is sort of like anticipating how you will turn around when =
driving an empty, 2WD pickup when there is snow on the ground!

I've had cars in the past, Randall, where I'd choose the shutoff point =
so it was pointed a bit downhill when I got back to it.  We don't need =
no stinkin' starter motors!

True, but very rarely is the battery stone cold dead (unless you left =
the
lights on).  With points (unlike many electronic ignitions), the engine =
will
still fire at cranking speeds even with the battery discharged below the
point where it's normally considered "dead".  Lead acid batteries even
recover (just a little) when sitting idle; so if the engine was running =
when
you got home, there is almost certain to be enough left to fire the =
plugs
the next morning.

But when I used to fight with the lack of generator capacity, many years
ago, I didn't own a hand crank.  So I got adept at push-starting the car =
by
myself.  Probably couldn't do it today, though.
