The brown/yellow wire goes into the harness near the alternator and =
comes out near the battery. This is a very original car, despite =
its=E2=80=99 175,000 miles, and the wiring harness has not been =
knackered in the past. We have opened up the plastic casing at the =
battery end to check the connection in there (thanks for the tip Dave =
Massey) and all looks OK but will re-check). Thanks.

Is it possible that the wire running from the Alternator to the Battery =
has a fusible link in it that has blown? These are sometimes added as a =
safety feature. Not a fuse. A fusible link. It looks like a regular =
wire with a bulge in it at some point. A fusible link is designed to =
burn through when subjected to excessive voltage. They are not =
repairable, must be replaced. Check for continuity between both ends of =
the charging wire.

Dave =E2=80=93=20

We checked that connection and it was clean and tight. We are STILL =
not getting any voltage from the alternator to the battery. We walked =
through the procedure in Dan Master=E2=80=99s book 3 times and every =
time, it points to a bad alternator which I had tested and it=E2=80=99s =
putting out over 13 volts (maybe not enough but more than 12). Why =
doesn=E2=80=99t this show up at the battery?

We even tested at the back of the alternator and it only shows 12 volts =
(?).=20

On the 76 TR6 (well all the CF series cars) the alternator output =
(brown) wire connects to the power tap on the positive battery positive =
cable with a 3/8 QC connector. If this connector is not making good =
connection even a good alternator will not charge the battery. Check =
that out before you spend any more money.

Here=E2=80=99s a synopsis =E2=80=93 Almost new battery went dead. =
Charged battery and took car to shop. Meter shows alternator is not =
charging battery (only 12 volts, not 14.6 as per Dan Master=E2=80=99s =
book). Buy rebuilt alternator and the same thing happens. Swap =
alternator for a second rebuilt unit =E2=80=93 same thing, battery is =
not being charged. Tried 3 different meters =E2=80=93 all showed 12 =
