Bob,
   I have the main battery earth going to the stud on the chassis
nearest
   the starter motor. I have one large earth lead going to the block
(the
   bolt near the alternator on a Kent engine) and another going to bolt 
   for the starter motor onto the bellhousing. All connections are
soldered 
   also.
