Good question.  I was just examining a veteran Shelby driver's fire
system. He has *both* nozzles pointing at the driver, one from the
center of the rollbar crossbar, and the other above the driver's door
pointing down.
  
His point was if you have a serious tank rupture/fire, a 5 lb bottle
ain't gonna put it out. In that case, to hell with the car, it can
be replaced. Give me an extra 10 seconds to get OUT......
  
I think I would still like a nozzle pointing at the carbs....but in
the big scheme of things, will that matter?  If it's a catastrophe,
I think I would rather maximize my chance to run away and race another
day....
