A few years ago, the vehicle code in CA was changed to exempt '73 and earlier
cars from smog inspections, with a rolling 30 year exemption to take place
starting in 2004. There are two bills in the California Senate (SB-800 and
SB-1172), that would gut this exemption. Both bills will be before the Senate
Transportation Committee in early April. If you live in California, you might
want to write, phone, or email your representatives/senators and tell them your
