Hi Richard,
Can't help you on LeMans (that's East of Texas, right?), but Bonneville has
lots of great classes for vintage cars and the driving requirments are easy to
meet. There are also other groups putting on top speed events in Texas and
other places. A guy I know took his bone stock Porsche 912 to Maxton and came
home with four records, with a top speed of under 115 mph! If you would like
to
participate there are certain safety regs (roll cage at Bonneville) plus fire
system, but not as involved as road racing. There are all sorts of classes for
almost anything on wheels. I was supposed to be at Bonneville this week but
the World Finals were rained out. I have been told the World Finals are a good
way to get started with events at Bonneville, as they turn out around 150 cars
vs. 400 or so at Speed Week, the weather is a LOT nicer (cooler) and more
records are broken due to the cool air. Also, if you plan on going to Speed
Week
next year get your reservations in NOW if you can. Too few hotels, too many
visitors.
