No. You can drill the case in situ. However, you need to take precautions 
that you do not introduce any metal "swarf" into the diff. The easiest way 
to do that is to liberally coat the drill bit (and the tap when you go to 
use that) with heavy wheel bearing grease (or beeswax or anything sticky) 
so the chips don't go flying. There's a "flat" on the case where you can 
get the drill started and the case drills pretty easily. Just work slowly 
and keep checking the progress of the hole as you work.

About the hardest part of that job is getting the car up off the ground 
high enough to get leverage on the electric drill.

But the job is a lot easier to do on the bench (if you already have the 
diff out).
