John-I agree that (after re-reading your original post) the idle  problem 
seems to point to the carbs as the problem. Hopefully, you will find  gas 
leaking up from the jet in one of the carbs, to confirm the source. The  sparks 
plugs in the cyls supplied by the leaky carb should be wet or black, if  
the needle valve is stuck open. The fuel pump is probably an easier fix  than 
having to remove the carbs to clean or replace the float valves.
