Re: high-school tester kid. The 'old guy' at big box parts store may know how to test the Lucas. I had the same experience and they had to get the "expert" to get it connected right to their tester. 
Re: Battery. I'm no expert, but 11 volts on the meter sounds like a good battery that is not getting charged. Not far away from not starting the car. The Lucas alternator would be putting out about 13 volts, I think. Anything over 12 indicates it's being charged. Right?

Re: Bosch alternator. Just a tip for anybody. Don't get one with no pulley expecting to use your pulley from the original. Not the same shaft size. I was VERY lucky when the local alternator shop had a pulley in their junk box that would fit the Bosch and line up right with the water pump.

Yep direct Lucas replacement, have a feeling the alternator was never the problem but some other "wiring" issue:.
