lead in fuel

Here is some info from the auto industry side:
One benefit of lead in the fuel was a "cushion" between the valve face and
the seat, to help limit the heat transfer to the valve and prevent "burned
valves".
Machinist`s have found from experience, ( thousands of valve jobs ), that
valve burning from no lead only occurs at very high temp`s and pressures.....
like towing, high performance racing, and maybe ambient temp of 105 degree and
pulling a long hill at high speed.
Personal experience in my shop verify those thoughts.
The auto industry is being forced to remove additives that will foul catalytic
converters and the air we breathe , like the zinc removal from oil, and
manufacturers are voiding warranties when those harmful ones are
used......like lead additives!
If you are going to do hardened seats in your engine overhaul, do the stelite
intake and exhaust valves too, one`s not much good without the other.
So............ make sure your cooling system is properly maintained and go
ahead and put your foot in it once in awhile, but don`t tow a boat.
