What exactly are you referring to  as "hard shifting"? I recall that 
there was something long ago where folks were discussing problems with 
newly rebuilt transmissions getting the shifter out of one gear and into 
the next due to what seemed to be tight detents, but if they slapped the 
shifter out of gear, it worked fine. This was not the case of grinding 
gears. I seem to recall that it was one particular type of trans, though 
I can't recall which version. Anyway, the cure was to go with Redline 
trans fluid, although I don't recall which one. This "might" be in the 
archives, but it was probably 15 years ago.
