[Roadsters] Transmission interchange question

Oliver,

I put a '69 U20 into my '66 1600 in 1972. Had to change the exhaust
system and the radiator because of fit-up differences, but they bolt together
fine. The 4-speed seems to take the higher torque of the 2L engine just
fine. The engine is metric and the rest of the car (pretty much) is SAE.

If
you fit a late transmission to an early block, you'll need to get metric bolts
to replace the SAE parts on the early installation. Also, if you fit a
five-speed to an engine formerly equipped with a four-speed, you need to
change the backing plate (which goes between the engine and transmission), as
well. The plates are different thicknesses on 1600/4-speeds and
2000/5-speeds.

Gary

Re: [Roadsters] Transmission interchange question

one more question on this
topic - does the 5 speed or later 4 speeds connect to the pre 67.5 engine?
has anyone actually done this? I ask this because I was told by many that the
plastic fan would connect to any 1600 engine. not true - the early (pre 67.5)
engines are sae, not metric, and that fan does not fit.

is there the same
issue with the tranny's? if not, are those fittings on all cars sae????

out there that has a list of transmissions that will bolt up to the R16 engine
