Alan,

Your assumption is correct.

If you see one "...wire coming off the fuse box through the firewall...", 
you should see a second.  Both are "red/black" -- red wires with a black 
stripes.  There should be a paired connector about even with the side of the 
inner fender just above the frame.  One lead will show +12V with the 
ignition switch on.  The other goes back through the harness to the reverse 
lamp.  Both my cars (a '66 1600/U20 and a '67-1/2 2000) have a two-wire lead 
in a plastic sheath which goes from the connectors beneath the fuse box over 
the top of the trans to the reverse lamp switch on the RH side of the trans.
