I have a fascinating book called "The Pride And The Fall" by Correlli  
Barnett.  Subtitled "the dreams and illusion of Britain as a great  nation".
 
In it he breaks down the major industries and where they failed.  
 
The single thing I remember most were the shipbuilders during World War  
Two.  Whilst America was building Victory ships at one a day to send over  
...They were on STRIKE  !!!!!!!!
 
  Why?
 
  They wanted extra pay for training the newbies in the yards.
 
We never freakin learn and humans never change.
