[Fot] brake cleaner and mig/tig welding - safety message

My suggestion (as a safety consultant) is to not use any cleaners with
chlorinated solvents. For the most part if they are non-flammable solvents
then they are chlorinated (unless they are some of the newer citrus based
products) - look at the labels and warnings. So that leaves us with using the
flammable brake cleaners, which may cause a fire or explosion. Keep them away
from open fires or sparks and for the most part they are not as bad for your
health as the chlorinated ones. These have stuff like acetone, xylene,
toluene, etc so there is still a health hazard, but in my opinion they are not
as bad as the chlorinated solvents. Also, if you use anti-spatter products
when welding, watch the labels. Some contained chlorinated solvents and
professional welders were being made sick from it. Most new ones I see for
sale say "Non-Chlorinated" clearly on the container, but if you have old stuff
hanging around check the labels. Joe(B)

Ran across this link on a lathe site I'm a member of. If you MIG or
TIG weld this is something you really need to be aware of. It
certainly opened my eyes to the dangers involved.
