I replied to Mike directly but with all these responses I haven't seen what I do, which is simply drill it all the way through for a 5/16-24 tap. I use a grade 8 bolt and a safety wired castellated nut on the other end. That approach saves the cross shaft. If I am using a good taper pin I do a second bolt, drilled and tapped, 90 degrees off on the other end of the fork. I also do that when I put a bolt though the taper area. No failures since I started doing this.

Some guys just weld the fork on and call it done. With a new cross shaft costing under $30.00, cutting the old one out with a sawzall is the most time effective way to go, but even on street cars I double up on the fork attachment hardware.
