[Fot] TR3 frame color question

I have been researching this rare  event were frames were painted colors other than black on TR3's since the early 1970's. I have personally covered this subject with Alice Dicks, Henry Webster and Ken Richardson they all confirmed, even with letters to me, that all the frames were painted chassis black. Over the years I have confirmed that there were very rare cases of frames being painted with body colored paint ( Powder Blue, Signal Red, BRG the three colors I have documented, now with this thread have Sebring White and Pale Yellow added to the list). They are found on later TR3A cars for the most part ( the 57 listed below is the earliest one I know of). One other strange thing is that the frames that were painted with body paint were not used on a matching body color car. Black Cars with Powder Blue or Red frames, BRG with Red, Red with Powder Blue, etc. Not exactly color coordinated, why they did not match them up is unknown. Why they painted them with body paint is also unknown, as the frames came in from a seperate plant area painted and ready for assembly. The bodies came in from Mulliners completely assembled and painted. So the two assemblies were never painted in the same assembly plant? The above was documented from original owner cars, highly original cars that had fully documented history and original cars that when separating the body from the frame for the first time, found original paint on the top side of the frame, untouched from the factory. If you are restoring a car in this category document your findings for future reference is highly recommended. I do not think that all of them came about because of show or race car use, but was done on ordinary cars during assembly. Off and on from 1957 thru 1960, not just one time period or batch. It did happen, how many, for what reason or why is lost in history. All the Best,Bill RedingerVTR

I’ve seen a couple cars with primrose yellow frames. I recall one had a red body. Dave H. Sent from my iPhoneOn Jan 26, 2021, at 10:14 AM, T. R. Hi all

Motor show cars sometimes had white chassis - I cam across
this she looking at the records at BMIHR Gaydon when I started
building the 1958 Earls Court demonstrator (3a) registered
2SMC.

Cars had three ‘standards’ of prep it seems and the records
show ‘A/A’, ‘A/B’, ‘A/C’ etc but no one seems to know what that
really meant. I surmised that it might be rolling chassis, display
car and demonstrator car for test use just by looking at the 57 and
58 records and the cars pictured and my car, which had nice chrome
bits everywhere but was also clearly nicely prepped at one time.
Other at Earls Court that year were two shiny white 3a’s and a
white rolling chassis. The red Glasgow and Geneva car Registered
3SMC looks to have a white chassis from the period B&W pics.
Could be all wrong of course.

The other white chassis cars were from the competitions
department who tended to paint some Chassis white (not all by any
means) so that cracks could be seen easily. This flowed into the
TR4 programme, where each of the four cars alway ran on white
chassis frames and still do today.

Hope this is useful
Tony

Essentially, that seems to be true.
But I suspect white slipped through once in awhile because of
display chassis, etc.
I encountered it when I was involved in a concours.
