Brad [I hope you don't mind but you had some very good questions and so I
thought I would send this not the the JONAT list]

So you've only had the Jag bug a month or so ... congratulations and
condolences in one sentence! It's the kind of bug where once bitten, hardly
anyone recovers and there is no know cure, but on the positive side to all
intents and purposes individuals bitten by the bug appear quite normal
(except in extreme cases!).

When you talk to Fried, perhaps he might be able to steer you in the
direction of local contacts, clubs, etc. We have used the Jag-lovers lists
before, although sparingly as we do not want to abuse the privilege. Jamie,
do you think it's time for a call for volunteers out to the mailing lists?

Regarding your item A - yes, we're looking at at least a semi-formal
gathering each day. In the morning, you pretty much have to have a daily
briefing session registering people, giving out maps, stopping places,
emergency phone numbers, (goodie bags!), etc. If a formal evening event is
not planned, at least give the participants some direction as to things to
do where they are staying. Take a look at the Regina Sector
(http://jonat.org/bob/REGINA/ReginaSectorHomepage.htm) and you will see one
Sector's take on events. Some some other things Sectors are planning are :
linking with an established annual Route 66 Tour (Arizona), a supper event
at the Pederson Automotive Museum (Los Angeles), an evening event as XK's
Unlimited (San Francisco), tying the Tour into the VanDusen All British
Field Meet (Vancouver BC) ... and a bunch more I have not mentioned.

Regarding B - YES WE WANT SOME PRESS. We are finalizing a press release
this week, and will let all SC's know when it is ready. The idea is that
national PR will be done by the Executive Committee, and local PR will be
done by the Sectors.

Regarding C - This is an item Hudson in Orlando thought of a few months back
and we are working on. Hudson was looking for a spare leaper he could put
on a trophy board or some such, and we will be seeing if Jaguar North
America can supply something.

Regarding your last item - the route is up to you. If you want to change
it, just let me know what you wish to change it to. As SC, one of your
tasks is to pick a route. And no, I don't live out that way ... I'm up here
in the great WHITE north (we had a very early snowfall this year that does
not want to seem to go away! Shortened the driving season for our Jags by
some 2 MONTHS !)

Great -

I will speak to my wife - she very much enjoys things such as this - so her
help in organizing other area's for you may be very very possible - plus
it's something "Jag Related" we can do together ( she's not much help here
for engine work - ha! ). She is very good about anticipating issues before
they arise - and we will have issues.

I am new to this so recruiting might be my biggest chore on this list ( I
only bought - and fell in love with - my 1990 XJ-S V-12 Coupe about a month
ago ) - I'll work on that immediately and get to know some of the folks in
the local Jag club ETC -

Do you think it appropriate to try to "recruit" on the Jag Lover's forum for
assistance - most everyone on my XJ-S forum seems quite helpful and
likeable - ( via e-mail anyway - ha!) - just a thought.

Ok - just some questions - about your "vision" for this - which is more
important then it sounds.

a. Do you foresee a semi formal gathering at leg each point- say in a
hotel - restaurant - or something of that sort? ( Not just an open parking
lot somewhere). Often we can get businesses to open up small
"organizing/meeting" room for us FREE - if we can commit 15-20 people to
having a breakfast or a brunch (ex: They'll let us use "the big room in
back") . Also if we can "block" some rooms in a given hotel ( my wife's
term for reserving a chunk of rooms ) they may also give us some space for
an hour or so allowing us to get everyone together and launching off - hand
out maps - identify fuel stops etc.

b. Do you want some press? - I have a few contacts that may be able to get
us on some local news or in a local paper ( depending on the events of the
day of course ) - as you know the "Harley" groups often get press like this
on slow news days ( don't ask me why ). If not that's fine also - I am not
in need of press - only asking.

c. You may be doing this - but I think it would be "fun" if there was one
single JONAT flag/pennant or a small something to hand off to each sector as
it travels around the country and Canada. As stated on the WEB site there
may not be too many people to make the entire trip ( if anyone ). So, some
sort of "Olympic Torch" type of hand off at each leg would - well, it would
just be fun and it would add continuity to the whole tour - thinking out
loud here.....

Thank you for the opportunity - I am very excited to be getting involved in
this ...please feel free to give my name and e-mail out to anyone you may
think is interested in the "MD/VA" leg of the tour....

Fried and/or Steve,

If you could give me a call or drop me an e-mail I would like to discuss the
"no mans land" end of the Philly/MD leg. The location you have listed is
really "out there" in the middle of nothing ( no offense if you may live
there - ha!! ). I would, If Possible, like to extend this leg an additional
35 miles into Virginia ( since this leg is not that long - maybe only 3 1/2
hours and 140mi. max. as listed ) - thus allowing the next leg to extend out
in to the beautiful Blue Ridge ( great photo ops!! AND possibly other
scenic and historical area's in Virginia ) - down 81 and east on 64 into
Richmond. Also, and probably more obviously - it would be extremely easy for
me to co-ordinate here in Virginia as that's my "backyard".

This is simply a suggestion - If this is already set then that's just fine -
I just wanted to make the suggestions as early as possible in this process
so that it would be easier to change.

I look forward to speaking with you soon -

Brad

  Brad

Thanks very much for your offer of your (and your wife's) assistance. You
might want to warn your wife that we might hijack her assistance on other
sectors as well ;o)

Where to start? A number of things to do to get the ball rolling:

  1. Peruse the website - in particular the "Coordinator Pages" - this is a
good place to find out what is expected of a Sector Coordinator (SC) and his
committee.

  2. Get in touch with Fried Martin. He is the previous sector coordinator
I mentioned. After you pick his brain clean, make sure you give him a hard
time about replacing his beloved Jaguar with a Benz!

  3. Get yourself a committee of interested and enthusiastic volunteers to
assist in organizing your sector. Trying to do it all by yourself will make
it a chore, and the idea is that the Tour is to be fun for everyone,
INCLUDING the organizers. Also, it is very important to get an assistant SC
assigned (and let me know who that might be), so that we have an alternate
contact in case you are on holidays or the like.

  4. Check the preliminary route Fried together for your sector (see the
website). The only fixed things at this point are the starting and ending
points - confirmation of actual route will be up to you and your committee.
Even the starting and ending points are flexible, provided you get
concurrence with your neighbouring SC's. The Blue Ridge Mountain route you
mention sounds quite nice and very much worthwhile considering - let me know
if this is the way you want to go and I'll adjust the map.

  5. Get in touch with your neighbouring Sector Coordinators (SC's). Steve
Ferring is the SC for New York (jag140@optonline.net). We do not yet have a
replacement SC for the Carolinas Sector - I'll drop you a line when a
volunteer surfaces (if you know someone down that way that might be
interested, please let me know).

  6. I will subscribe you to the JONAT mailing list. This list is separate
from the JONAT-CHAT list, and is for SC and assistant SC communication.

  7. Ask questions, make suggestions, and don't hesitate to speak up. All
input from SC's is valuable, and I find the exchange of ideas between the
SC's on the JONAT list seems to assist all in their planning process.

  Again, thanks for volunteering !

  Bob

Sounds like a big responsibility - but since my wife is an events
coordinator/meeting planner and does this for a living I will "recruit" her
immediately - ( she doesn't know this yet - ha!)

So YES - I will be will to take on this role - Let me know what I need to
do to get up to speed - as there is much to do, and it appears and this
approaching in June 2004 for this area. I signed up for the chat as per your
request.

  I live in Fairfax, VA ( 17 miles form downtown Washington , DC ) - and I
was going to comment that the leg from Baltimore to Richmond is rather short
( just about 140 miles total ) - and you may want to modify this leg
include the VERY scenic Rt. 81 ( Blue Ridge Mountains) - down to 64 then
East back into in Richmond - just a thought. ( This would make that leg just
under 250 mi.). OR possibly include a trip INTO DC for some great Photo ops.
( but since this is a stop over leg - I am sure most will go do that on
their own).

Looking forward to speaking with you and I look forward to being able to
make this a successful tour!! You may give me a call anytime on my cell if
you need to speak with me directly - or most any evening at home.

  Sincerely,
