Mark,

FWIW, we stayed at the park hotel in Mesa Verde, 
and thought it was just great.  Nice restaurant too,
both hotels and restaurant had great sweeping views, 
and were not too expensive.  And we got a room 
same day on a weekday in the summer, so it may
not be incredibly tight.  So yes, there is at least SOME
lodging there...
