I feel badly for Kim as well. However, like Mark, I had arranged hotel
accommodations literally upon my acceptance of the SC position. The hotel
owner is a friend. I made this abundantly clear from the outset. Kim
contacted me about lodging and I explained this to her. She seemed fine
with this.

I did not realize that she was looking for the tour to forward or sustain
her career. After all, I was told to expect a crowd of 10-25 people and I
told the hotel this. Then as time grew near with little involvement in my
sector, I notified the hotel, cleared the reservations and everyone was
happy. No hard feelings and I did not have to resign to my friend. Rather,
she is grateful for the exposure which will come next time around. Any
experienced hotelier knows that new "groups" are risky but will develop over
time.

I think Kim's resignation from her job is a wee bit knee-jerk considering
the forum. Or perhaps it is a question of paradigm: was she offering help
or profiteering? (I do not mean to be ugly at all--I am just suggesting that
"volunteering" should be external to "carreer-centric operations."

I know that I made it very clear to the hotel that nothing was guaranteed
and they were more than appreciative of that.

FWIW--nobody broke down on my trip and I am thrilled. Let us not forget
that I own a Jag shop that profits when these cars fail on the road. In
fact, we only came within a quarter mile of my shop as our other sights were
favorable to my tin shack.
