[JONAT] Jay returns to the USA!

Alan,

It would be interesting to know what their specific difficulties with
the JONAT concept were. As one of the early SCs, I felt that in the
beginning, we were a bit disorganized, a bit grandiose in our initial
plans, and we dragged our feet getting the route finalized (but that's
speaking as someone with an early sector). However, when you have a tour
that's 2-1/2 months long, it's tough the get the folks at the end as
energized as the folks at the beginning.

If they were following JONAT's planning in the early stages, I'd suspect
their consternation related to the discussions over what the tour would
be and how it would be run. If they were frustrated early on and dropped
out before the collective vision crystallized, I would understand it. If
they had stuck it out past that point, they would have seen that
everything sort of fell into place. Even if they had no involvement with
JONAT and just somehow had a problem with the concept, it has to boil
down to a preconceived notion of the tour. It isn't a multinational
organization with a centralized command and control structure where the
SCs are just cogs in the machinery. The only constraints were a starting
time and place and an ending time and place -- and the SCs put their
heads together to determine those. If anything, the constant shifting of
handoff points caused me a few headaches.

The best advice I can give to any SC is to set up your sector as an
extended local tour for your local club. Go the places they want to go
and do the things they want to do. Chances are 90% of those are what
anyone from another sector would be interested in, as well.

I billed my sector primarily as a way for local club members to get
their Jaguars out to see some of the stellar Arizona scenery (always
more fun with a group) and drive old Rt. 66. Secondarily it was part of
a national tour which would include folks driving from other areas of
the country. In other words, my sector would have stood on it's own as a
club event. It may not have been seven days long (for me) five days for
JONATers, maybe five/four. In hindsight, however, I wouldn't have wanted
to miss any of it. In fact, I'm sorry I didn't get to do more.

Have the grumblers check out the JONAT site for the sector reports from
Denver, Arizona, and the whole way up the West Coast. They all went
quite well and I think they'll change their minds.

Good work carrying the torch, er, cat, through the frozen North. ;-)

Bob,

It was a great event. This was the 14th annual event. Perhaps after 14
tries, Jonat will be as successful.
It is held every year, but rotates between Winnipeg, Minnesota and
Thunder Bay.

I fail to see how a crashed computer kept you home. I agree it is a
PITA, but I am surprised it took priority over the tour.

Next time Ian can practice his wonderful skills (he does seem to be a
real
hustler) in both Regina and Winnipeg. I doubt anyone from here will
step forward to play an active role. Also, in talking to the Mn folks,
they seem to be quite unhappy with the Jonat concept also. I'm not
quite sure why this is. They are a great bunch of people, and more than
willing to take their Jags on the road. Perhaps it was too long in the
planning - people didn't get interested in an event that was more than a
year away when they first heard about it. If you want some feedback
from a non-participant who is a real Jagnut, contact Dave Pritchard. He
owns 5 historic Jags and when I talked to him this weekend he was quite
negative about Jonat. He had contacted you directly some time ago about
the tour, so you should have his email address. Unless it is all gone on
the old computer.
He is very well known here, and president of the local club. If you can
swing him around, perhaps he is capable of getting the next tour off the
ground locally. I was not well known in the local club, having only
been to two or three meetings. An 'old boy' like Dave is bound to have
more success in persuading members to get involved. OTOH, no other club
members attended the Rendezvous event this weekend, and the only event
Dave came to was the show and shine the last afternoon (with his 1938
SS100).

Over and out,

Alan
