Sounds like this is the path I'll take.  I didn't realize that 1' in 500' 
was all that accurate... I'm sure fiberglass tape will be good enough for 
what I need to do.

I was kinda hoping someone would tell me about a nifty range finder deal 
that cost $50.  :-)
