I'm going to start with the "I don't know much about guns" opening 
line and then go ahead anyway!  You say you want to "scare off" 
animals.  If that's what you really want to do, how about an air 
horn?  You can have a few of those around without worrying about 
securing them.  If you want to do more than scare them, how about a 
shotgun?  It would still have to be secured and the same concerns 
about corrosion, etc would apply.  It seems to me that the main 
advantage of a pistol is that it is easier to carry.  If you aren't 
going to carry it, then perhaps a shotgun would serve your needs.
