If I understand the question correctly, when you add a new email account at
a new vendor, the email account name will need to be unique to that
platform, so you will most likely need to have a different email address
(e.g., bob at cox.net may be able to be bob at gmail.com, but probably that
account already is used. You might need to add some numbers
bob1234 at gmail.com or add your last name and middle initial
robert_e_smith at gmail.com, etc.).

What you can do, however, is just retain your old email account (e.g.,
bob at cox.net) and configure it with auto-forward with delete to your
new email address.

This way, all email sent to your old address will still be delivered to
your new address, and you can send email from your new address.

Over time, it just gradually migrates your email to the new account while
preserving your old account (i.e., people will see the new "sending
address" when they receive your email and will reply to it). You
will, however, need to register the new address with lists and forums
you participate in.
