You are dead on here!

I went out of my way to rent an '86 right they came out for a trip from
Minneapolis around Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa.  It was likely the
best sedan that I had ever driven up until that time.  Felt better than a
friends M-B. And went better because the M-B was a diesel.

Improvement came in '89 with our SHOs, but although Ford made a few minor
changes, likely as a result of warranty issues, there were few actual
improvements.  However, I suspect that they lost some money at the start of
the model run, but because of cost cutting, etc, they made a handsome profit
by the end of the run in '95.

The Gen 3's are likely a different story.
