[Shotimes] Gen2 ATX question

Many of the ATX's that I've known about will start off in the gear
selected unless its drive (drive is pretty much up to the PCM which gear
to select). With my ex ATX SHO, I would sometimes use second exclusively
in the snow.

I was thinking about this today while driving my moms Volvo.  Doesn't
that just mean that it won't shift into 3rd but still start off in
first?  Putting the selector into 3rd, doesn't make it start in that
gear, and obviously D doesn't start in 4th.  Is this just with Volvo?
