Buy a digital camera from a company well known for making film cameras.
This would be Olympus (great lens's and overall quality for the money),
Fuji (don't buy their low end crap), Canon (I own the A-40, VERY good
camera) and to a lesser extent, Sony.. But I'm not a big fan of Sony's
cameras (they work off of their video camera experience and use those
crap Memory Sticks), Minolta (no personal experience), Kodak (all I can
do here is shrug, they make great film but their cameras are kinda
goofy)
Go to this webpage: http://www.imaging-resource.com/
Most importantly, you want to make sure that the camera doesn't take
lousy pictures! This doesn't directly correlate with having a low
megapixel count though - there are some really crappy 2 and 3 megapixel
cameras out there! You're looking for a 3x _OPTICAL_ zoom (digital zoom
doesn't count, it just crops the image and enlarges the pixels, you can
do that post-process), a common and cheap memory medium - I used to like
Smart media but you'd rather have Compact Flash due to its larger
capacity. You may look into accessories like additional lens's.. Many
cameras have threaded barrels to attach options (Wide and Tele lens's
plus filters) directly to their lens's or through adaptors, some SLR's
can even fully exchange lens's!
I know I'm going to toot my own horn but, "beep beep!" Buy a Canon
Powershot series.. Doesn't matter which one, just get one. The Powershot
A series and S series are all great cameras for the money. I own a
Powershot A-40 which is a 2 megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom, can
accept lens adapters and filters, has a waterproof case option, uses
compact flash memory, has many manual settings and works perfectly well
on full auto. The macro mode doesn't focus close enough for some tastes
and there may be a firmware update that you have to perform to address
some focus problems. Overall, I'm very happy with my choice and I could
send you some sample pictures at full rez if you like.
Jeff (oh yeah, the A-40 takes little movies with sound...)

Hey all,
Although I'm an idiot when it comes around to today's digital camera
technology - I'd still like to purchase one within my budget of $150 to
$250.
What brands do I stay away from, and what are recommended?
What are the more important features that I should look out to get for
my
bucks?
Are there any digital cameras within my money range that can shoot
movies?
Thanks, Norm
