Here is a clarification about resolution- if you want to e-mail photos or post them on the internet, then you don't need much resolution.  An 800X600 image is plenty large for this.  Many people don't run their monitors any higher than this thus your photo would fill their screens.  Any reasonable camera these days will produce this size image.  This size image will also print reasonably well if you print small prints- 4X6 or less.  If you want good, larger prints, then you need to go higher resolution.  Most people would be OK at 2 Megapixels but if you want to consistently print large prints, go to 3 megapixels.  If you are a serious photographer you probably could benefit from 4-5 megapixels, but you probably already know that.

You can go to websites such as popularphotography.com and find their own guidelines for what to look for in a digital camera.  I think commercial sites such as bestbuy.com will also have a few guidelines of their own.
