Don,
If the tranny hasn't been sitting for a year without fluid, and you are
just going to kick her over, confirm that she idles, then shut her off
within a few seconds, you are ok. Put her in neutral and push the clutch in,
preferably with a leg instead of something that could accidentally pop out
like a 2x4. In a tranny, the fluid works more to allow particles to get out
of the gears and distribute heat than to make things run smoothly. I've
known a few cases of cars being driven a few weeks without fluid before the
synchros started to make noise and the owner discovered their stupidity.
Better ensure something holds the diff in place, of course.
