If you have to hold the clutch down with your foot to start it anyway, I'd think all
you needed to do was to hear it catch.  After a second or two of running...maybe tap
the throttle once to make sure you actually have control of the engine, you should
be satisfied that it runs, and shut it down.

That's basically what I did when I was fixing the cancer.  I just cranked it over
after the new CPS was hooked up and the timing belt was on, but nothing else.  It
ran for a second, then I shut it down and put it the rest of the way together, very
relieved.
