After driving josh's 89 w/ a quaife about 3 yrs ago, I got hooked. Had one
in my hands real soon after :o)
In my opinion, if I picked up a low mile clean gen2 (would like to when we
move back to GA) a quaife would be the first thing done to the car. I've
been running one in the 89 for a few years now, and hope to put one in the
92 this winter.
If you do the work yourself, even with a full refresh parts kit from SHO
NUT, (seals, rings, etc)...you could pull the tranny, install it, and put in
a brand new clutch all for about $1500.
I dunno if Tom Smith is lurking about, but I talked him into one for his 91
last year and I don't think he's ever looked back. Runs at summit point a
lot. From memory I think my 92 and his 91 ran similar lap times there
(similar mods, mostly stock couple years back). Later we started running
khumo track tires, and the times dropped more. My 92 stayed with the open
diff, tom started running with the quaife. I've ran behind tom in my 89 and
I can assure you he's not much slower than me. Besides brakes and good
tires, nothing will get you around a racetrack as fast. Totally changes the
way the car behaves, it's a blast to drive.
Nothing wrong with the budget used tranny route either, just depends on what
you are after. Matt appears to have sunk some $$ into his SHO in the recent
past, so in his case, a quaife wouldn't be out of line I don't think.
