Not to mention my post today of my issue with corrosion at and under the
positive battery cable jacket that is driving me nuts.

People have had problems of this sort caused by electrical gremlins.  The
first thing you suspect with intermittent problems is a problem with
electrical connections.  Here are the ones that I have heard of:
1)  Where the main wiring harness connects through the firewall into the
computer- someone had an intermittent problem so they removed and reattached
this a couple of times and cured their problems.  The theory was that it
regained proper contact.
2)  Where the wires plug onto the ICM on the intake manifold.  In the
instance I remember reading about someone either had loose connections or
when the engine moved due to a bad motor mount something would wiggle the
wires and affect their connections.
3)  Ford used to have a recall for bad MAF connections.  I have read about a
procedure for disassembling the connector and soldering the connectors.
