Tried to stay out of it, but....

Handling:
MR2: more Lotus "feeling"; really light and tossable; make anyone look like
Schumacher
Fiero: more mid-engine Firebird "feeling"; very heavy; more grand tourer
than sportscar
X1/9: what more can I say, it's Italian! Great looks, awesome voice, not
much punch
914: Still the best "low-price" mid-engine; best handling

Engine:
MR2: needed more "oomph", more like a 2.0L engine, not a supercharger
Fiero: needed a nice, light weight 4-cylinder with "oomph", like an all
alloy Quad-4 HO
X1/9: needed allot more "oomph", an all alloy 2.0L 16V would have been nice
914: was perfect with the 6, and still great with the 2.0L

Looks:
MR2: needs a little help in the looks department
Fiero: best looking mid-engine this side of a Ferrari
X1/9: for it's time, it was almost a babe
914: timeless, like Sophia Loren, beautiful then and now

My "lust" scale:
MR2: 3
Fiero: 2
X1/9: 1
914: 4

I would take any of them, but that's my desirability scale for stock cars.
It changes quite a bit if radical mods come into play. The Fiero would
slide up to 4, due only to the fact of so many different engine swaps
available. The MR2 would stay at 3, that 4AG engine is just sweet. The X1/9
would climb to 2, just 'cause I'd like to put a new Fiat 5-cylinder in. The
914 would fall to 1, simply because I wouldn't want to mess up such a nice
car to begin with.

Just my opinions :-)
