I replied to Josh off list but wanted it to go to the entire list, just
to show my gratitude for all the help you guys provide out there! So,
via copy and paste here it is:
Joshua and Julie,
I understand. I really don't want the tools because it will be years
before I ever go in there again. Are you saying $10 added to the shim
rental fee? If so that's perfectly reasonable. I know this all sounds
like I'm being a big cheapskate - but I have so much to do to this car I
have to look at everything I'm doing in detail. As soon as I get the
thing running again, I have to deal with tires and brakes and I know
this is probably going to cost more than I paid for the car. I am an
official SHO enthusiast now, whether my wife can appreciate it or not
:-)
Out of desperation, I contacted our local Ford Dealer service dept
today. I think I talked the Parts Manager into loaning me the tools if
they have them. My Uncle is the Parts Manager for our local Chevy
dealer and they know each other. When I made my odd request to borrow
tools he said "that goes against every policy we have in place here". I
could tell he had a smile on his face though and he said he would see
what he could do.
As far as the shims go, I told him depending on your price?, I will
probably be going elsewhere for those.
To make a long story short - I would like to give this guy at least a
chance and see what he comes back with. To say the least I was VERY
surprised he even gave the notion a second thought. He didn't know (it
was late Wednesday when I talked to him) if they even had the tools
there.
If this doesn't work out locally and you are willing to loan me your
personal tools for $10 on top of the shim rental fee - I very much
appreciate it and will contact you soon to let you know exactly what I
want to do. Sorry for the long, rambling response, but I feel like now
that I opened the can of worms with my local Ford Dealer and it appears
as he's willing to help, I better at least give him a chance.
You don't have to worry about me returning your tools - as I said
before, I will do so promptly if this is the way I end up going and once
again - Thank You! Also, as I continue on here I will be in need of
many parts and will be looking to ShoNut for many of these.

I don't rent the tools because it's not really worth it - they pay for
themselves the 2nd time around. However, if you really don't want them,
I can rent you my personal set. $10 will be added to the rental fee.

Subject: 60k kit rental
Hello,
I live in McMinnville Oregon and have my 93 MTX torn down for a 60k
service. I am ready to do the valve adjustment and will probably rent
one of your shim kits. I want to replace all 24 shims with new ones. I
don't want to buy the tools though because I know I won't need them
again for a long time. Would you guys help me out on this one? By
reading the shotimes list I know you have had trouble with people not
returning the tools. I am an honest and trustworthy person and WILL
return the tools promptly.
I'll also be replacing a ton of other stuff, I just can't afford to do
it all at the same time
(plugs,wires,cps,therm,sender,gaskets,radiator,etc.).
Thanks in advance for your help.
