The common problem here is that the clip holding the cable onto the shifter in the console will break, and the cable will slip off of its "ball". This happened to me a couple of years ago and I got inventive with my fix. Other people have reported a clip sold by Mopar that can be adapted to work here but I haven't tried it.

When mine first broke, I was 10 miles from home. I took the top off of my console and figured out what was wrong, then figured out that I could wedge a towel in there to hold the cable onto the ball. This allowed me to get home. I rigged up a little better solution with a bungee cord running across the floorboard and over the top of the console until I could invent a more permanent fix. I finally disassembled my shifter, drilled and tapped the end of the ball, and put a small bolt and big washer on there to hold the cable in place. With the bushing gone there is a bit more slack in the shifter but it still works fine and after awhile I didn't even notice it anymore.
