[Shotimes] Heater Core ?s.

Heikki,

Before you go through all the trouble, make sure the heater core is shot. A 
common Taurus (not just SHO) malady is that the hoses to the core get loose 
and they are close enough to the firewall that they actually spray coolant 
into the heater box and make the same symptoms as a broken core.

In my case, I removed the hoses, cleaned the nibs that go through the 
firewall, bought some new worm clamps and cranked them down good. It still 
smelled for a while because of the extraneous coolant still in the box but the 
leak is gone.

You can flush some water through the box to help clear it out. I can't exactly 
remember where from though.
