It's the evaporator.  Remember, evaporation of liquid to a vapor is how you get cooling. 
The condensor, in front of the radiator, uses ambient air to cool the hot refrigerant to
a liquid after it goes through the compressor.

Yes...it is a good idea...they aren't too expensive.
