When I built mine I looked at what the Helm manual used. A three leg design
is much superior to the two leg design. Mine fits the across the engine bay
and rests on the fender edges where the hood covers it. I tape a rag on each
foot to protect the paint. The engine is supported in a cross wise manner.
Used the lifting hook by the alternator and then used a manifold plenum
support mount to bolt a short metal strap with a hole drilled towards the
top. Then used large eye bolts through this hole and the engine lifting eye.
Note: This is a ATX car. The third leg is bolted about 2/3 across the main
support and the end rests on the radiator support. This third leg pivots and
is NOT bolted tight to the cross support. I use a small square of plywood
under the leg to protect the top of the radiator and support. With the three
support points it allows the engine to be tilted in many different angles
which I found very useful.
Finally I have less than $30 in the entire unit. But it is built only for
the Taurus where the Harbor freight one will telescope for wider or narrower
engine compartments.
