[Shotimes] Timing Belt/Timing chain

I see your point Jim and I understand what your saying but I agree that we
disagree. So I think I will change my definition then, since I used the
word "traditional".

My definition of the front of an engine is then this....

(1) If all the belts/accessories are on one side than this is the front.
(2) If accessories are on both sides, then the front is the opposite side
that the power or trans comes off of.

Any other strange configuration that is out there that doesn't fit into
those two descriptions, needs to be labeled which side is the front.

Front is a vague description anyhow. I can say I am tall, but what does
that mean and in relation to what?

Why do you call the front of the car the front? It doesn't drive in that
direction all the time. I can drive my car in reverse gear, sitting in the
drivers seat, arms abducted grasping the wheel, head midline, pretty fast.

So if I'm in reverse and traveling backwards, does the side of the engine
towards the firewall become the front?

P.S. This is all in good fun. ;-) In a leadership class I took, we were
given a scenario where 6 people needed hearts. Twenty people in my class
had to decide in which order those people were going to be ordered to get
one first, given there background, etc. Of course, nobody could decided, so
we ultimately decided that we couldn't decide and the only fair way was by
random choice.

See, there you go, using the word "traditionally". This is the 21st century
and the new "tradition" is FWD automobiles.

When do we break "tradition" and use new terminology that makes sense??

Traditions should not be used for 'traditions-sake', they should be used
because they still hold true and make sense. In this case they don't.
