Well Frank, anything is possible. I could be sitting here in my kitchen,
typing away at the laptop, and be struck by lightning on this clear, sunny
day also.
Even in the days when Detroit was building crapola and probably ground
cranks that were shuffled off the line, they would not have ground ONE
journal, the whole crank would have be reground. In today's manufacturing
environment, and out-of-spec crank will be thrown back into the melting pot.
The chances of having non-standard bearings in an engine is about zero from
an American mfr, and I would guess that Japanese mfrs have never used a
non-standard bearing in the factory.

At the risk of extending this thread further--it's possible that the factory
that built the motor may have had to machine a journal for an undersize
bearing (in other words, you can't count on the fact that all the original
bearings were standard size).

I've built a lot of engines for standard American cars. If the crank was
good we just put in standard bearings and didn't bother to check
clearances.
If I was doing my SHO I think I would check the clearances just so I would
know what they were. If the crank looked questionable I would check
clearances for sure.
