I think I'd steer away from that mechanic, he's a moron.  The rear seal/carrier is pretty damned simple to work on.  I've done it with the engine on a stand, with very little clearance between the stand and the back of hte engine.  Kind of like saying "I don't want to drink this milk, it expires in a week."

When I had the clutch replaced recently (for the first time since I've
owned the car) the shop did not want to replace the seal for fear of
making the leak worse.
