Caught this thread late. I think too that the 300HP SHO motor was mythical but this is what i know:
I knew some of the production people who actually tested this motor before it went into the Taurus. Claims of 300 hp or closer were reported by Yamaha and there test facilities.
Supposedly there were special cams that yamaha developed for this motor to make the additional HP as well with a few other tweaks. Obviously the A/F ratio going to the motor and being tuned by Yamaha would allow one to deduct that they would be able to extract the maxium HP and Tq from this motor. This motor was detuned for the Taurus and the "magical cams" were locked away.
My understanding is this motor was designed for Ford to go into a indy car ( which is why the lower end is so stout ). Ford abanonded this idea but was stuck with the Yamaha motor contract and hence forth the SHO.
I know from my motors esp the first SUPER SHO I owned, that 3.2 motor with headers stage II cams .. etc .. everything .. duel exhaust was right at 300 HP.
I seriously doubt, looking back, that Yamaha could take a stock 3.0 motor and make some minor modifications and get 300 HP out of.
I just dont see it.
But, still would love to get my hands on those cams if in fact they were real to begin with ! :)
