Ron,

For most people I think the better stategy in that situation 
would be to shift up, even a bit early as 8k is pushing the 
motor a lot on the track.  Also, unless you are running way 
different cams, the car isn't making much power at all past 
6500 rpm.  Any time lost in shifting would be made up by 
better acceleration to the braking point.  Shift at 6000 or 
6200 and let the car cook more in its power band! At least 
most stock motors.

REmember, was it Mid-Ohio where the car blew up (300,000 
miles on that motor) because the guy said he didn't feel 
like shifting another time on the back straight!

Could have been driving it today if he had shifted!  It 
think he was a bit past 8k on that track,

If you have downshifting done before turn-in, it shouldn't 
upset the car, especially if done right.  Agreed, it is 
harder to do, but it is the right way most time, at least 
for the best track times.
