I picked up a SHO for my personal use as a winter car. It is a 93' ATX Red/
black in pretty much like new condition. The catch is that the motor was
overheated. The heater core hose sheered and the owner didn't know that and
proceeded to drive the car.
Long story short, it wouldn't idle well and ran like it was on 5 cylinders.
Yesterday I pulled the intake and replaced the plugs and wires and fixed the
coolant hose. So I filled it up, let it bleed the air for awhile and took it
out. It runs a lot better. It pulls as much as it ever did. The only
problem is a slight knock. It happens under load as well as under no load.
The oil pressure is fine though and it almost sounds like it's a top end
noise, although it is more of a solid noise than an upper end typically
makes.
I guess, before I delve deeper into trying to save this engine, I'm curious if
the extended overheating could have possibly broken down the oil and my fix
might be as simple as an oil change. As far as the head gasket goes, the car
doesn't seem to be burning coolant, the oil is very clean on the dipstick with
no foaminess or discoloration, and the motor feels like it's running on all 6
cylinders.
Any thoughts or experience here, keeping in mind that this is only the winter
beater. :-)
