No - I didn't abandon the '89 just becasue of the
ape's-arm list of problems like a rational human being
would do. Got out there with my son and taught him
about oxidized paint and rubbing compound, and how
real men hand rub their cars ;)
After a quick once over the car looks like an average
15 year old car now with some shine to the paint. It
is going to need a second pass of rubbing compound on
the roof and hood, a pass with polishing compound and
then some wax to look decent, but it no longer stands
out as just plain ugly.
I felt guilty not spending the time on more mechanical
stuff but I bet the neighbors appreciated it! I'm not
going to park it in the garage or driveway until I get
the leaks stopped.
The oil leaks are very small now - time to try some
maxlife soon and do a short oil change to get out the
old gunk in there. Coolant leaks are down but still
getting some. With the temp on hot and the heater on
BIG leak. I think this thing is leaking for everywhere
you can leak from on coolant - major issue. I cannot
even *find* the lower radiator hose to tighten it.
Anyone want to sell an '89 Helms cheap?
Lace covers are horrible but we have removed 10 layers
of grime off them so far so the non corroded parts are
starting to shine.
Every hose clamp in the intake system was loose -
tightened them all - bet that will let the PCM run
better than all the little leaks it probably had in
the intakes.
I need to do the mast replacement on the antenna just
to have some tunes to listen too while I work on it.
Assuming the motor still works - cannot hear anything
from it in the car when I hot the switch - I am hoping
it is just the mast.
