I think you may have it all wrong. Dealers pay VERY LITTLE for a trade in.
On paper, it may appear that way, but in reality they usually get them for
nothing or close to it.
Example:
Let's say I'm a dealer and I have a car that I bought at the wholesale
auction. 1992 Cadillac Eldarado with 129K on the odometer. I paid $2,885 for
the car and it books (NADA) for $7,200. I put it on my lot for $7,200 and
you come in with your average condition 1992 SHO and want to trade for the
Caddy. I tell you that I'll give you $3,500 for the average SHO in trade.
You pay me $3,700 and your SHO as a trade. I made $815 and got your car for
FREE.
