Yup, valves don't clatter unless the guides are totally worn.  Probably
pinging, probably carboned up combustion chambers.  Mine (both) live happily
on CA 87, I use a can of Techron every month or 2.  But there's already
enough alcohol I think, to keep everything fairly clean.  Oil will cause
carboning of the pistons; the cats will keep the car from smoking except on
cold starts, you may be getting a puff?  There are some new-tech chemical
products to remove carbon without terminating your engine.
